I. Project Background

The rapid development of modern intelligence has made remote management and maintenance of various devices a significant trend. Not only do industries such as manufacturing require industrial routers for remote configuration and maintenance, but the education sector is also actively adopting this technology to provide more flexible and advanced educational experiences.

Below, we share a relevant project case from the education industry:

Geological University, a comprehensive university focusing on earth sciences, aims to cultivate students with solid theoretical knowledge and practical skills. To better meet teaching needs and improve the quality of education, the university has established an open laboratory. By configuring industrial-grade routers, teachers can remotely manage student experiments and ensure students practice within specific timeframes.

  1. Data Transmission: Use industrial routers to transmit PLC device data to the data center for real-time monitoring and control.
  2. Configure VPN: Ensure the privacy and stability of data transmission with a communication device featuring multiple encryption functions, establishing a secure VPN channel for the school.
  3. PLC Remote Configuration: Enable remote access to the school’s PLC devices via routers for parameter configuration, program upload, and download.
  4. PLC Remote Maintenance: Under teacher guidance, students can remotely troubleshoot, upgrade systems, and perform maintenance on PLC devices via routers.
  5. Account Management: Assign each student an account to facilitate teacher planning of practice times and ensure students practice within designated periods.

III. Solution

To address the project requirements, Beijing Technology developed the following solution:

  • Use of SR500 Industrial Routers: Equipped with 5G full-gigabit network ports, high speed, and high performance, the SR500 supports multiple VPN protocols such as IPsec/L2TP/PPTP/DMVPN. It provides access control, port mapping, DMZ, and SPI firewall functions, establishing a secure VPN channel for Geological University, ensuring reliable and real-time data transmission.
  • Technology Device Cloud Platform: Students can remotely access PLC devices for parameter configuration, program upload, and download. The platform also supports troubleshooting, system upgrades, and other maintenance tasks.
  • Device Access Management: Supports multiple device login permission management, local and remote HTTP, HTTPS, Telnet, and SSH router management, enabling multi-user management and different permission assignments. Each student is assigned an account, allowing teachers to plan practice times through the backend management system and ensure students practice within designated periods.
  • 24/7 Technical Support: Engineers provide round-the-clock technical support to ensure the smooth implementation and subsequent maintenance of the project.

This project collaboration met the school’s teaching needs, enhancing the quality and effectiveness of education. By using the SR500 industrial router, remote configuration and maintenance of PLC devices were achieved, providing Geological University with a secure and stable network environment, improving the maintainability and manageability of the equipment. The project was highly recognized and praised by the client.
